Q. 83. Are all transgressions of the law equally heinous?
A. Some sins in themselves, and by reason of several aggravations, are more heinous in the sight of God than others. Ezek. 8:6, 13, 15; 1 John 5:16; Ps. 78:17, 32, 56.
I. Worse Sins & Degrees of Punishment
“…You will see still greater abominations than these.” (Ezek. 8:7-15)
“...it will be more bearable on the day of judgment for Tyre and Sidon than for you.” (Matt. 11:20-22)
“…whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.” (Matt. 12:31-32)
“Therefore he who delivered me over to you has the greater sin.” (Jn. 19:10-11)
How much worse punishment, do you think, will be deserved by the one who has trampled underfoot the Son of God…? (Heb. 10:28-29)
II. More Light & Greater Responsibility
Conclusion
For it would have been better for them never to have known the way of righteousness than after knowing it to turn back from the holy commandment delivered to them. (2 Pet. 2:21)
