On the third day back in Zicklag after beating down the Amalekites who stole their families and possessions, David and his men received an Amalekite messenger. This Amalekite came from the north and brought news about Saul's demise in battle. He also came bearing Saul's royal insignia thinking that David would offer him some kind of reward for his troubles. Instead of rewarding the Amalekite messenger, David had him executed for his unrighteous deeds and he led the men of Israel in mourning for Saul and Jonathan. In mourning over the death of the Lord's anointed and executing judgment upon the Amalekite, David showed readiness to serve as king over God's people.
