Two words characterize the main idea communicated in this text: beginnings and fragile. There can be no doubt that the messianic kingdom is established in its initial stages with Judah's anointing of David. The climactic raising up of the messianic kingdom in David will have to wait for another seven years when he is exalted to sit upon the throne in Jerusalem to rule over all Israel. It is this two stage development of kingdom initiation and expansion that highlights the important feature of this text. Initially, the kingdom that takes root in Judah is almost imperceptible as David is anointed in Hebron with little fanfare and he takes a throne that is unimpressive in the world's eyes. These humble kingdom beginnings find a parallel in the administration of Christ's mediatorial kingdom as he raises it up over time and throughout the world. Often this kingdom is small and unimpressive in the world's, eyes, but when it is raised up it is done so through the prayers of the saints, by sovereign grace, and experiences hostile opposition for Satan.
