It's in the Old Testament that we worship the birth of grace. We often think of the New Testament as characterized by the grace of God. However, we don't understand the grace of the New Testament without understanding its roots in the Old Testament. God chose a people out of His love and goodness. He pledged to them unfailing love. He bound Himself to them by covenant; and He bound them to Himself by covenant as well. He pledged His love and loyalty to them--a lovingkindness and steadfast love that never fails. Out of that love He rescued and redeemed them to Himself. He delivered them from bondage in Egypt. Now, in ten words, He asks of them this expression of their love and loyalty to Him. The Law is an expression of the Covenant of Grace. And the first four words teach us how to give our love back to Him.
