B. A General and Universal Principle (Rom. 10:9-10)
II. The Unpardonable Sin
A. The Bad Confession
• A public, verbal sin (Matt. 12:24) • Not new to the NT. (Num. 15:30-31; Ps. 19:13; Ex. 34:6-7; cf. Acts 7:51-53) • A sin against the Holy Spirit (Jn. 16:8-15; Matt. 12:31-32; Mk. 3:28-30)
B. The Blasphemy of the Holy Spirit (cf. 11:49-51; Acts 7:51-53; 1 Thess. 2:14-16)
• The final act of a persistent rejection, and refusal to hear and heed God's message of salvation. • Once the Holy Spirit is poured out on the Day of Pentecost, and salvation is preached in Christ's name by the power of the Spirit, a refusal of that message of salvation would fill-up the full measure of guilt, and seal Israel's doom.
“The sin here referred to by Jesus must consist in a conscious, willful, intentional blasphemy of the clearly recognized revelation of God's grace in Christ through the Holy Ghost, a revelation which nevertheless out of hate and hostility is ascribed to the devil.” (Dr. Impeta, quoted in Geldenhuys, p. 352)
III. The Perseverance of the Saints
A. Convinced of Better Things for You (cf. Heb. 6:4-9)
