With Absalom still in exile in Geshur a whole two years after his murder of Amnon, the push for reconiliation began to brew in Jerusalem. David, who wants reconciliation with Absalom but cannot figure out how to secure it with appearing weak or unprincipled, is presented with the resolution to his dilemma through a crafty scheme cooked up by Joab. By means of a shady lady from Tekoa, Joab proposes that David should just reconcile with Absalom without enforcing the death penalty for Absalom's murder because examples from the Torah show that on occassion, the Lord forgave people of their crimes by not imposing the sanctions of the law upon them. David, all too willing to put this problem behind him, siezes upon Joab's plan and brings Absalom home, sealing reconciliation with a kiss. It turns out that the kiss of reconcilation was the prelude to a coup.
