I. Luke 3:21. Some reasons why we should not want to be baptised as Jesus was baptised:-
1. John's baptism was not NT baptism. Acts 19:3-5. NT baptism Trinitarian.
2. Christ was not baptised by immersion anyway. - the symbol and significance of Christ's baptism. Acts 2:16; 8:15,16; 10:44,45; Luke 2:23; Num 4:3,47; 8:6,7; Heb 9:10; Isa 52:5; 1 Pet 3:21.
II. Hebrews 4:1,2. Coming short of the promise in the church of God.
1. The promise of the covenant v1. God's covenant promise both binding and conditional - God fulfils his unconditional decree (in bringing his elect to salvation) by extending conditional promises to all sinners - The assurance God's covenant promise brings to believing parents concerning their children - only the elect are enabled to keep the covenant through faith in Christ Jesus.
2. The requirement of the covenant v2. The apostle warns the Hebrews to be alert to symptoms of departure and unbelief of the promise in themselves and in one another.
3. The warning is to the visible church v1. Merely having a place in the visible church does not secure against damnation - the necessity of a personal application of the truth through faith in Christ Jesus.
Four points of application concerning:- - Christ rejecting Jews - Christ rejecting church members - our duty to one another - the duty of those outside the church of God.
