For 7 months the Philistines suffered under the heavy hand of the Lord, which turns out to have been 6 months and 28 days longer than it needed to be since after 2 days of hosting the ark of the covenant, the Philistines knew that they had no business harboring the ark of the covenant in their country. When the Philistine politicians had enough of the suffering and when public criticim began to mount against them, they called in the religious leaders to help them Fed Ex the ark back to Israel. The religious leaders however, wanted the ark to be sent back in such a way that it would prove that the calamities suffered by the Philistines had not come by chance, but by the sovereign hand of the Lord. To establish which of these two contradictory causes accounted for their suffering and misery, the religious leaders proposed to send the ark of the covenant back to Israel on a wooden cart pulled by two milch cows who had never been harnessed before. As these two cows came strolling up to Bethshemesh the Israelites celebrated and the Philistines knew their sufferings were not by chance, but, by the hand of the Lord. Sadly, the people of God showed themselves to be more foolish than cows when they got the wise idea to pry into the ark in order to get a good look inside. The end result was that God struck down 50,070 Levites with a great slaughter so that they would know that the Lord is holy.
