In bringing judgment upon the house of Eli, the Lord permitted the Philistines to carry the ark of the covenant off in exile. After placing the ark in Dagon's temple, the Lord demonstrated his supremacy over the false god Dagon, by forcing the idol to lay prostrate before him and then by hacking off the head and hands of Dagon to manifest his power over the Philistine idol. Then for seven months, the Lord brought severe plagues upon the the Philistine cities in order to drive them to their knees and to force them to acknowledge his sovereignty.
