During the dark days of the Judges, a famine of the word prevailed throughout Israel; word from the Lord was rare and visions were not breaking through. All of a sudden, in the still of the night, divine revelation breaks through to Samuel as he is sovereignly called to serve in the office of prophet. The first prophetic task assigned to Samuel is to bring a message of judgment upon Eli and his house. On account of Samuel's faithfulness to this call, he is confirmed as a prophet and the whole nation of Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, is electrified by the thought that a prophet is in Shiloh and the era of a famine of the word is over. The concluding section of this message briefly addresses the cultural and political implications of Samuel's call to prophetic office and calls attention to the significant features of the character of divine revelation disclosed in chapter 3.
