Thomas Goodwin the English Puritan describes Adam and Christ as two giants upon which all of humanity hangs. In God's sight Adam is the corporate representative of all humans, and those people represented by Adam remain under the weight of God's wrath against sin. However, those who are represented by the Lord Christ are spared from this wrath. The inheritance from Adam is death, but the inheritance from Christ is life.
Adam is not simply an example nor is he simply the first sinner, but rather Adam is the representative father of all humanity presenting his inheritance before the Lord. In Adam all men sinned; each human partook and sinned with Adam according to the scripture. The covenant of works was given to Adam on behalf of all mankind wherein life was promised to Adam and all of his posterity on condition of perfect obedience. Adam was a probationer tested in his obedience, and by his disobedience sin, guilt and death entered into every human as an inheritance.
Jesus Christ also stands before the Lord to represents a new humanity with grace abounding for many. Christ purchases a people for himself, and those purchased cannot be plucked from His hand. Those who have been justified by this free gift of righteousness are released from their bondage and inheritance of guilt. With Christ was made the covenant of grace whereby a remnant would be purchased and become the beneficiaries of this new covenant.
