SERMON INFO
1. Mysticism in church history.
Mysticism - claiming special knowledge attained by ritualism and self-denial as in Gnosticism and Romanism. Protestant Reformation majored on the objectiveness of Scripture, whilst the Anabaptists, Quakers etc, stressed experience above the authority of the Word of God.

2. Mysticism in the church today.
When subjective feeling displaces the authority of the Word of God.

3. Causes of mysticism in the church today.
1) Ignorance of Scripture through laziness in study.
2) Ignorance through lack of public preaching and teaching.
3) Habits imbibed through the example of others.
4) Charismaticism - claiming direct revelation from God.
5) Hyper-Calvinism leading to presumptivism or mysticism.
6) A fear of a purely intellectual and feelingless form of Christianity.

4. The correct place of emotion, feeling, in Biblical and Reformed Christianity.
Right feelings and affections proceed from belief of the truth, they do not define what is true.
