In this world all men are slaves either to sin or to God, and the behavior of men reveals the nature of this servitude. The slave to sin is characterized by vice, shame and death, but the slave to God is characterized by righteousness, sanctification and life through their union with Christ.
Believers are called to be slaves to obedience; that is slaves to the word and will of God. Being a servant to God requires obedience or commitment to a standard of teaching as Christians are given over to the Word of God. Slavery to righteousness entails freedom from sin and the taking on of holiness. As lawlessness leads to more lawlessness, righteousness leads to sanctification. Obedience is offered out of a desire to know God and enjoy him and to magnify the name of our master. The fruit produced by the life of men always reveals the root of their faith. The fruit of obedience to the Lord brings peace with God whereas the fruits of sin bring shame and death.
