Romans Chapter 7 is a chapter describing the relationship between the law of God and the believer. This section falls between a discussion on being free from sin and a discussion on the freedom of the spirit. The law requires complete obedience for salvation, but mankind being born into sin is unable to keep this law unto salvation. Those born again are released from the saving requirements of law in the sense that they are dead to the law. Paul uses an example from marriage - not to formulate a theology of divorce but rather - to show that our bondage to the law being done away with, we are free to form a new relationship or marriage with Christ. The purpose of this new relationship is to bear fruits of righteousness through Christ for the pleasing of the Lord; obeying the lord out of gratitude.
However, in this freedom from the requirements of the law Christians are not free to live as they please. The holy law of God is useful to us in teaching us the utter sinfulness of sin. The law does not create sin in the heart but rather reveals sins very existence in the heart, and this law is given to drive us to Christ. The redeemed of Christ continue to struggle with remaining sin, and even in this struggle the believer continues to delight in the written law of God. Despite the difficulty of remaining sin, Christ is and was obedient to the law of God, and there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
