This sermon is to prepare us to come to the Lord's Supper next week. One of the vows of the covenant of communicant membership promises that you will diligently read the Bible and regularly attend the worship services. So, as we prepare to come to the Lord's Supper, we need to understand what we have promised. We need to understand how God works in our lives. God's written Word is central. When we promise to attend worship, we are not promising merely to be there. When we promise to read the Word, we are not promising merely to read it. Central to the worship service is the preaching of the Word of God and our private reading of the Word of God is never to be understood as detached from the preaching of the Word of God. These activities taken together are to make us listeners to the Word of God. As listeners, we are those who take these words of the Word of God to heart. And then, we are to put these things into practice. In the Lord's Supper this is part of what we are promising as we come to the Lord at His table. We come with a heart that sits down with the Lord asking, "My Lord, what would you have me to do?" And in the listening to the Word we seek the answer. |
