The effect of Mysticism in the Church is that tendency to displace the authority and supremacy of the Word of God. It seeks to know and presume the mind of God by means other than the Scriptures, whether that be by ritualism, supposed further direct revelation, or mere feeling and emotional inclination. It has always infected the church in one way or another, and it is good for us to be aware of its influence past and present. This address looks at Mysticism in the past at the early church, at the time of the Reformation and especially in our own day. In conclusion we see that the Christian faith is by no means void of feeling, but that right feelings and affections must proceed from the truth, their place is never to define what is true.
