Idea: “Just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another.”
Intro: John poses the question in vs. 3, “How can I know that I truly know God?” This is the second answer to that question. You know you are a Christian by practicing love for one another. As with the test of righteousness you need to remember that John isn't advocating a position of salvation by works, or salvation by loving others. Instead, he points to the presence of mutual love for fellow Christians as evidence that you belong to Christ and thereby may test your salvation.
